After learning that both the Cook County state’s attorney and the Illinois Atorney General have refused to defend the state’s gay marriage ban in court, others are stepping in to take their place.
When Labmda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union in Illinois filed lawsuits challenging the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, Illinois government officials refused to defend the ban, essentially paving the way for full marriage equality throughout the state, right? Yeah!!! Full legal equality is coming to Illinois…woohoo!!!
Not so fast, say the conservative voices!! We’re here (as always!!) to make sure that playing field NEVER gets level! Moowhawahwah. But I digress…
Back to the post.
Instead of an easy path to success, two downstate law clerks have been given the right to intervene and act for the defense of the state law (I suppose that’s fair enough, darn it!). They are being represented by the Thomas More Society, which advocates against same-sex marriage. But they are not the only ones hoping to squash dreams. The Illinois Family Institute (don’t you love that name?!?!? Sounds so innocent) would also like to aid in the defense of the state law, although that won’t likely happen.
Man, it sure would be awesome to have the same legal rights as the rest of my fellow Illinois citizens. I really don’t care what you call it…civil union, domestic partnership, marriage, super awesome fun day, etc…just give me the same legal rights as others and I’ll be quite fine.
