Finally, some good news for the Obama campaign!! Actually, it is GREAT news if you ask me.
Doing what he so miserably failed to do in the first debate, Barack Obama showed the country that he can be forceful and direct when need be. He laid into Romney’s record and past statements from the start, refusing to let up for even a moment. This is the Obama we all had hoped would fight back against the GOP nominee two weeks ago. Instead, Obama delivered a very lackluster performance in that first debate, allowing the Romney-Ryan ticket to gain some much-needed forward momentum. The Republicans had been riding that wave of renewed popularity since then, gaining in the polls both nationally and in the all-important swing states.
Knowing that he needed to right the ship and take the gloves off, Obama came out swinging from the start. In the words of one CNN News contributor, “President Obama came. He saw. And he kicked butt.” I couldn’t have phrased it any better myself. Yeah!!
While the victor in this second round match was rather clear from my admittedly biased point of view, online news outlets seem to be split in their verdicts. Yahoo! News has proclaimed Obama the clear victor. Fox News, on the other hand, has the nerve to declare neither side as victorious, claiming that last night’s moderator, Candy Crowley, clearly sided with Obama…simply because she refused to allow Mitt Romney to continue to tell blatant lies on stage. CNN’s Election Center homepage, meanwhile, declares that “Obama Bounces Back, Dominates Debate.”
So, let’s take a quick look at what these three news outlets had to say about last night’s debate from New York state:
1. Yahoo! News (non-partisan news source) – “When the evening began, one observation dominated the conversation: If President Barack Obama has another debate like the last one, the election’s over. When the evening ended, I was struck by a different thought: If Obama had performed this way at the first debate, the election would have been over. In every debate, whatever the format, whatever the questions, there is one and only one way to identify the winner: Who commands the room? Who drives the narrative? Who is in charge? More often than not on Tuesday night, I think, Obama had the better of it.” To read this article in its entirety, click the following link: http://news.yahoo.com/obama-wins-the-second-debate–too-bad-it%E2%80%99s-not-the-one-that-mattered-1568495.html
2. Fox News (conservative news source) – Having the nerve to title their debate review article with the term BIAS ALERT, Fox News proclaims that Mitt never stood a chance in this debate due to the moderator, Candy Crowley, clearly siding with Obama throughout the evening. REALLY?!?! These guys just refuse to give credit were credit is due. Even me, the bleeding-heart liberal himself, was able to say (if begrudgingly) that Romney was the victor at the first debate. Why are conservatives, like Fox News, so unable to just admit the truth?! Here is what they had to say, in short: “Crowley first plays umpire, then joins Team Obama”. What happened to Fox News being “Fair & Balanced” (as their homepage declares)??? Haha. Anyone with half a brain would know that Fox is anything but Fair & Balanced. 3. CNN News (non-partisan news source) – The Alpha Male showed up tonight. In the second debate, President Barack Obama came. He saw. And he kicked butt. The POTUS (aka The President of the U.S.) took command of the second presidential debate from the start. He thrashed Mitt Romney on everything from trade to taxes. And then he closed the debate by reminding everyone of Romney’s arrogant assault against 47% of the American people.
When he is around real Americans, Romney is uncomfortable. He often looks like the Queen of England being forced to participate in the cow-chip tossing contest at the county fair. When asked about women in the work force, Romney, whose record of promoting women at Bain Capital was dismal, actually spoke of “binders full of women.” A metaphor for the ages.
There was one “holy smokes” moment when Romney falsely accused the president of not calling the attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya, a terror attack. But, as the fearless and fact-based Candy Crowley noted, Romney was not telling the truth. The day after the attack, Obama referred to it as “terror” — even before full reports were in. I will close this debate wrap-up with my absolute favorite exchange between the two from last night. As Mitt attempted to defend himself after Obama correctly claimed that the GOP nominee had extensive investments in places such as China and the Cayman Islands (a known tax shelter for the world’s wealthy), he tried to relate that Obama’s own pension portfolio also contained investments in the same places. This argument might have worked, if not for a masterful retort from the Commander-in-Chief:
“Mr. President, have you looked at your pension?” Romney said. “I don’t look at my pension. It’s not as big as yours,” Obama quipped. With that one seemingly innocuous statement, the Obama camp was able to remind the American public of just how out-of-touch Team Romney is with the rest of the country. After all, let’s not forget that Mitt Romney, who earned more than $20 million last year, paid just 14% in taxes. You read that correctly. 14% (this is the number released by Romney himself). Now, ask yourself what tax rate YOU paid last year. For me, who earned slightly less than $50,000 last year, I was slapped with a 25% tax rate. Seems fair, right? Only if you’re a Republican.
