In lieu of a post regarding politics (hey, even I get tired of slamming the GOP sometimes! hahaha), today’s piece will bring back Things I’m Loving Now for 2013. Read on for a few of the artists, writers or television series I’m currently obsessed with. Enjoy!
1. TV – The Americans – Having just premiered a couple of days ago on the FX Network (also home to another favorite of mine, American Horror Story), many of you may not even be aware of this show’s existence. If you didn’t catch the first episode, though, get to it! This smart, taut spy thriller is exactly what is great about television programming at the moment. Gone are the days of boring old law enforcement procedurals (tired of the 83 different CSI and NCIS shows yet?????). The Americans is nothing like any of that. Set in 1980’s America (when a certain old, tired B-list actor named Ronald Reagan ran the show in Washington), this production delivers tons of drama and great action. The show centers on a young couple (played surprisingly well by Kerry Russell and Matthew Rhys) and their suburban D.C. life. The husband and wife team appear to be your average, run-of-the-mill American couple raising a family…except for the fact that both parents are actually Soviet agents who were planted in America to spy and carry out secret missions for the Russian KGB. It’s Cold War intrigue right on your TV set! If you missed the premiere, be sure to download it, YouTube it, or just catch the rerun on FX. You are sure to be pleased! –>TheLeftyWolfe Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
2. Music – will.i.am and Blake Shelton – Could these two guys be any more different? I think not! Yet, here I am gushing over how much I truly enjoy their current singles on the radio. As for will.i.am (member of the Black Eyed Peas), he made the list courtesy of his hit song, Scream and Shout, where he partners with Britney Spears to create a club-thumping dance track sure to get your legs moving in all the right directions! If you are a fan of fast-paced, get-your-heart-racing music, give this song a try. It’s yet another bonafide top 5 hit for both of these hot music makers (yes, even Britney can get some things right every once in a while. lol). As for Blake Shelton’s inclusion on this list…don’t forget that I am really just a good ‘ole southern boy at heart and will always love me some good country music!! I’ve been a fan of Blake’s for a couple of years now (ever since his last CD, the awesome Red River Blue). His latest single to hit the airwaves, Sure Be Cool If You Did, is just another example of why this guy is so very hot. His songs contain lyrics everyone can relate to (who doesn’t like to drink beer and have a good time?!?!), making him truly relatable to the average guy or gal. Unlike many of today’s music stars, fans can see themselves chilling with Blake on the couch sipping a beer or two while watching the game on TV. Whether you enjoy country or dance/pop, either of these song choices are sure to please. –>TheLeftyWolfe Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (Scream and Shout), 3.7 out of 5 stars (Sure Be Cool If You Did).
3. Movies – JJ Abrams & Star Wars – In case any of my fellow Star Wars geeks have yet to hear the news, the freakishly talented JJ Abrams will be taking over as director for the next Star Wars trilogy (Episode VII is set to be released in 2015). In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last decade or so, Abrams has quickly established himself as bonafide Hollywood royalty. He started out years ago with the cult favorite TV series, Alias (which is when I fell in guy love with him). He followed up that award-winning turn by creating Lost, a true pop culture phenomenon that ran for six seasons on ABC. Combine those two pieces of work with the recently re-booted Star Trek franchise and JJ Abrams becomes quite the mastermind. Is there anything he can make that I wouldn’t love??? Doubt it! Anyways…as geeked out as I was to learn that Star Wars was coming back, I was initially very concerned that Disney would be at the helm (they recently bought all of the rights to Star Wars from George Lucas).. The Mouse House was able to put those worries at ease with the hiring of the genuis Abrams. Anything this guy touches turns to gold and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for the Star Wars gang. I’ve heard completely unfounded rumors that the new trilogy will focus on a period of time taking place many years after the end of Episode VI, with Luke possibly playing a much older version of himself and running a newly-founded Jedi academy. I’m all in! –>–>TheLeftyWolfe Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (I give it a perfect score for one reason only…JJ Abrams is directing!!! This is like getting Peter Jackson to direct the new Hobbit trilogy…woohoo!!!).
Until next time…Chris
